ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has expanded and enhanced the series of MXL MIG/MAG torches for industrial-duty applications. ESAB has boosted the duty cycle from 35 to 60% and now offers a full range of MXL gas- and water-cooled torches designed for industrial-duty applications. All MXL torches feature knuckle joints and spring supports that improve flexibility to reduce wrist strain. A new handle offers better ergonomics and soft-grip areas on the 341, 411W and 511W models further increase comfort. A refreshed front-end design accepts the same standard ESAB consumables.

Unless weldable materials are relatively thin, edge preparation is usually necessary for achieving high-integrity welded joints. Depending on the joint design, this requires one or more beveled edges on one or both of the components. Types of bevel are named after the capital letters that look similar, the most common being V, X, Y and K. However, welding preparation is not the only reason for cutting bevels - another application example is countersinking Hardox plate for fixing with countersunk screws. Because of the extreme wear-resistance of Hardox, even costly carbide-tipped drills and countersinks have a limited life, so plasma beveling is an attractive alternative for producing countersunk holes.

ESAB, a world leader in welding and cutting technologies, has been promoting its recently launched Rebel as a ‘weld anything anywhere’ machine, and this versatility and capability have been demonstrated admirably by Bob Evans of RW Evans Welding Services, who has used it for a broad spectrum of tasks on a farm owned by another member of his family. In a matter of months the Rebel has been used with stick electrodes for repairing damaged components, hard-facing and general fabrication; it has also been used in sMIG (smart MIG) mode for fabrication and repairs, the machine’s Tig capability has been employed for root welds and building-up worn components, and MIG brazing has also been performed.
